Buying local has an impact. For each dollar spent with a local business, approximately .45 cents remains in the local economy. Spend that money with a national chain and watch the .15 cents that stays here struggle to make an impression on our area.
Your food dollars are even more likely to impact the local economy. A recent study estimated the Huntsville metro's food spending at $912 million dollars per year...over $800 million of that leaves the area. Even our local grain and beef are shipped off to other states to be processed. If you buy a side of beef from a local sustainable farmer, that money mostly stays here, except for a few purchases of wire fencing or other items not locally produced.
Yes, it's a bit more expensive to buy local...but you and your community get so much more back.
